Game Notes

LARGO, Md - The #1 ranked Riverhawks exhibited a great team win at Prince George's Community College, host of this year's Division III, Region XX tournament, Sunday afternoon (2/24), defeating the NJCAA DIII Region XX Pioneers, 74-54. Three Riverhawks would hit double digit scoring – to include a double-doubles by Sarah Healy (Davidsonville, MD/South River) and Marcelaine Augustin (Upper Marlboro, MD/Riverdale Baptist).

The first quarter had both teams struggling to find their range from beyond the three-point arc. The Pioneers of Butler shooting 1-4, and the Riverhawks 2-7. Neither team fared any better in the 2nd period from three-point-range, and the Riverhawks were only slightly better from mid range, but shots in the paint by the Riverhawks began to find their way home as Healy would hit all three of her lay-ups off assists from Marcelaine Augustin. As the first half expired, the Riverhawks would have the slight advantage 37-32.

Able to stay consistent in their offensive drive, the Riverhawks would be challenged with the impressive shooting of Pioneers Carly Burdett as she hit 4-5 of her shots. The Riverhawks would remain ahead 41-48 at the end of the period.

Tough Riverhawks defense and Pioneers turnovers would allow AACC to begin to pull away in the 4th period. Before leaving the game with an injury, Healy would go for an undisputed 5-5 helping to extend the Riverhawks lead, and and eventually secure the victory. The Riverhawks would outscore the Pioneers 26-13 in the fourth and deciding period with a final score of 74-54.

Anne Arundel welcomed Karley Haensler (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie) back from injured reserve and she would finish just shy of a double double with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Augustin would add another double-double to her resume with 14 points and 10 assists. while Sarah Healey would also finish with a double-double of 30 points and 22 rebounds and would be named the tournaments Most Valuable Player. Augustin, Haensler, and Lacey Hinkle (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) would join their teammate with All-Tournament Team honors.
