Game Notes

An unfortunate, 54-49, loss for the Riverhawks at home this Sunday (11/4), falling to NJCAA DIII Region XIX Jersey Blues of Brookdale Community College. Despite a thrilling comeback in the fourth quarter, the Riverhawks would fall just short of the win. Both teams displayed great intensity from opening to final whistle, giving fans quite the game to watch on Sunday.

The visiting Jersey Blues would grab the first quarter lead; crediting their ability to control the boards, as they out-rebounded the Riverhawks 19-10. Able to finish on their second chance opportunities, thanks to ten offensive rebounds, the Jersey Blues had the 16-9 lead after the first. The momentum would stay in favor of Brookdale through the second quarter, posting their highest (19). Although stepping in to keep the rebounds out of the Jersey Blue hands, the Riverhawks second quarter 11 points would find Brookdale leading 35-20 at the half.

The two teams would slow down a bit in the third as a drop in shooting for each team (4-24 Brookdale/5-15 AACC) would show cause to re-focus. With both teams putting up ten points in the third, the Riverhawks would trail by fifteen (45-30) as they headed into the fourth quarter.

Needing to make something happen, the Riverhawks did just that. Going on a 14-point scoring drive, with Karley Haensler (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie) draining back-back buckets from beyond the arc – AACC was down just one point (45-44) with 5:15 remaining in the game. The teams would battle back and forth as the Riverhawks looked to overthrow the Brookdale lead, but the relentless Jersey Blues would quickly answer to maintain. Despite getting within in one point (50-49) with under three minutes to play, the offense for Brookdale would allow them to find the net once again. Followed by a lay-up off the steal, the Jersey Blues would score one more time and finalize their win, 54-49, as time expired.

Haensler would finish with 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals on the day, Aloni Quille (Odenton, MD/Arundel) with 13 points, Lacey Hinkle (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) with 9 points and 4 assists, and Sarah Healy (Davidsonville, MD/South River) with 7 points and 19 rebounds. Adding 3 steals and 5 assists to her totals, Marcelaine Augustin (Lowell, MA/Riverdale Baptist) is ranked no. 1 in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MD JUCO) for assists (14), and no. 2 for steals (15). Healy is currently ranked no. 1 in the conference for her rebound total (45), no. 3 in the conference for her rebounds per game average (15), and no. 1 for total blocks (5). Haensler is up there as well, ranked no. 3 for steals (10). Still plenty of season left but it's always great to see the Riverhawks among the leaderboard.
