Softball to Face Hagerstown Saturday in Region XX Play-In

ARNOLD, MD – The Anne Arundel Community College softball team has earned a berth in the 2019 Region XX DII Softball Tournament and will face second seed Hagerstown in a best-of-three play-in series May 4-5 in Hagerstown.

The Riverhawks (12-21, 6-11) earned the seventh seed with a 6-11 record vs Region II members in the same division. Hagerstown posted a 16-2 record in region to earn the second seed.

Game one Saturday is set for 12:00 pm, with the second game scheduled at 2:00 p.m. If a third game is needed to decide the series, the teams will play a third game Sunday at a time to be determined.

AACC has had an up-and-down year, finishing the regular season on a four-game skid with losses to Frederick and Chesapeake. When the Riverhawks won games, they won big, outscoring opponents an average of 12-3, including three shutouts.

In the two teams' regular-season series, Hagerstown swept AACC, 14-1 (5 inn) and 10-0 (5 inn) in Arnold on April 6.

Sophomore infielder Katie Rosati leads the Riverhawks' offense with 42 hits, 20 extra-base hits, 41 RBI and a .396 batting average, which ranks sixth in the region.

Sylvia Frye has accounted for over a quarter of the team's stolen bases, grabbing nine of the Riverhawks' 35.

On the mound, Gracie Culley has pitched over 115 innings, ranking her second in the region. Her 3.40 ERA places her sixth among region pitchers, and her 117 strikeouts places her third, just behind Emily Talbert of Hagerstown. Offensively Culley leads the team with 10 home runs hit and a .745 slugging percentage, good for fifth in the region.

AACC's last win against Hagerstown came in 2016 when the Riverhawks split a regular-season series with the Hawks in Hagerstown. AACC won the nightcap in five innings, 12-4, after dropping the opener, 5-1, on April 22.

The winner will advance to the NJCAA Region XX DII Softball Tournament May 9-11 hosted by top seed CCBC Catonsville.
