Game Notes

The Riverhawk women's soccer team got their first win of the season this past Saturday afternoon (9/8), defeating the NJCAA DI Region XX Knights of CCBC Essex, 5-3. Always a difficult opponent for the women's soccer program, AACC needed to play at their best to compete with their opponent who they have not beaten since 2014.

Making the statement for the Riverhawks, Randal Graham (Bowie, MD/Bowie) would grab the 1-0 lead with a nice chip shot over Essex goalkeeper by receiving the well-placed ball from Madeline Stevenson (Severn, MD/Archbishop Spalding). With attacks managed at either end, the teams would break for halftime with the score held at 1-0 in favor of AACC.

The Knights left almost no time for the Riverhawks to get comfortable in the second half, getting a header by AACC goalkeeper Hannah Lieb (Annaplois, MD) set up from a corner kick just 49 seconds in. It would be a prolonged battle to reclaim the lead, but thanks to the speed of Angela Sarrach (Crofton, MD/South River) handling the ball past her defeners, AACC would prevail in jumping ahead, 2-1, as Essex goalkeeper failed to handle Sarrach's shot on net.

The two teams would play to the rivalry, trading goals in just a few minute window after Sarrach's. Essex would answer to tie the game 2-2, followed by Stevenson scoring off an assist from Angelina Horan (Lothian, MD/Calverton) to claim the lead 3-2, but Essex once again quickly responding to tie the game 3-3 with 22 minutes remaining.

Horan would get the lead back in favor for the Riverhawks at the 80th minute of the match – sprinting down a long ball set up by Reyna Bocanegra (Severn, MD/North County) then finishing off some nice one-on-one play against the Essex goalkeeper.

Just minutes later, after Horan would be quick to finish to react on an Essex GK deflection, burying another goal to put AACC up by two.

As time expired, the Riverhawks would claim the 5-3 victory.
