Game Notes

Anne Arundel Community College played host to the 2018 NJCAA District D Championship this past Saturday (5/5) as the Riverhawks faced-off against the Region 15 Sharks from Suffolk County Community College. Punching their ticket to the 2018 NJCAA National Tournament, the Riverhawks defeated the Sharks, 20-7.

The Riverhawks would jump out with the early lead as Caitlyn Shriver (Pasadena, MD/Northeast) would finish her shot just 34 seconds off the draw, assisted by Madeline Szanyi. Within minutes, Sofia Michael (Crofton, MD/Arundel) would score two – first solo, then assisted by Mariah Scott (Severna Park, MD) to take a 3-0 lead for AACC.

The Sharks were able to respond with two of their own, but it was clear the Riverhawks had control over the game. Angelina Horan (Lothian, MD/Calverton) would re-start the Riverhawk scoring with a quick off-hand goal assisted by Michael. Michael would go on to assist the next two AACC scores – Alyssa Baronella-O'Toole (Severn, MD/Old Mill) and then to Szanyi before following up with a goal of her own (assisted by Shriver).

Suffolk would sneak one more in, but Sofia Michael would once again respond from Shriver. The Riverhawks would close out the first half with a dominating 17-4 lead.

With a considerably slowed down pace to the second half, AACC was able to keep control of the game. Despite allowing three Shark goals, the Riverhawks also picked up three and closed out the win, 20-7.

Mariah Scott and Lina Horan would each finish with a hat trick as well as two assists for Scott. Szanyi, O'Toole, and Shriver each finished with two goals, with four assists for Szanyi and three assists for Shriver. MacKenzie Schwartz (Pasadena, MD/Northeast) and Yasemine Yazici (Crofton, MD/Arundel) each finished with a goal and Yazici also with an assist.

Leading the day for the Riverhawks was Sofia Michael with six goals and three assists. Michael's fourth goal of the day marks her 100th career goal for the Riverhawks.
