Game Notes

The Riverhawks took down the No. 2 team in the nation this past Sunday afternoon (4/22), defeating the Lazers from Onondaga Community College, 18-12. Ranked at No. 4 going into the match-up, it will be interesting to see how the rankings will be altered with AACC's latest victory.

Hosted at Anne Arundel Community College, the Riverhawks wasted no time making a statement in the game as Sofia Michael (Crofton, MD/Arundel) scored off the first possession from a successful draw control won by Mariah Scott (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) – with the assist credited to Madeline Szanyi (Mayo, MD/South River).

Just minutes later, the fired-up Lazers would get one back to tie the game at one a piece. Compared to Onondaga, the seemingly quiet Riverhawks would let their play do the talking, as Szanyi would answer twice for AACC – grabbing the 3-1 lead. Attempting to stay in reach, the Lazers would get one back but failed to keep momentum as AACC's Alyssa Baronella-O'Toole (Severn, MD/Old Mill) netted two on her own, followed by Szanyi with another.

Although Onondaga were able to string a few goals together to keep it close, numerous fouls and failed clears gave the Riverhawks ample opportunities to stay on top. At the half, Riverhawks were ahead 10-8.

Second half action continued healthy for the Riverhawks, with little change to their play, AACC continued to push their offense and capitalize on opportunities produced from foul mistakes generated by the Lazers. Yellow card foul trouble definitely a factor for the Lazers in the second half as 5 Riverhawk goals were claimed during man-up advantages. Never giving up the lead, AACC gracefully closed out the heated face-off to earn the win.

Leading in the 18-12 final, Sofia Michael (Crofton, MD/Arundel) finished with 6 goals on day with Madeline Szanyi (Mayo, MD/South River) behind her with 4 goals and 3 assists. Alyssa Baronella-O'Toole (Severn, MD/Old Mill) and Angelina Horan (Lothian, MD/Calverton) each recorded 3 goals with an assist on the day and Caitlyn Shriver (Pasadena, MD/Northeast) and Mariah Scott (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) each with 1 goal and 1 assist.
