Riverhawks Hold Off Cougars

ARNOLD, MD – Anne Arundel Community College's women's lacrosse team held off Frederick Community College's late run in the second half to secure a, 17-12, win this past Tuesday evening. The victory against the NJCAA DI Region 20 Cougars marks the second Conference/Division win for the Riverhawks, putting them 2-0 in the conference and 3-1 on the season. Despite some impressive wins against Nassau Community College, CCBC Essex, and Suffolk CC – Frederick falls to 3-2 on the season and 1-2 in the conference with the loss to AACC.

 

The Riverhawks wasted no time at the start of the game as Alyssa Baronella-O'Toole scored within the first 2 minutes of the contest. O'Toole would end the game recording 4 goals and 1 assist. Emily Rowe, and Sofia Michael also netted 4 shots for the Riverhawks. Caitlyn Shriver posted a hat trick, and Renee Ruppert and Madeline Szanyi each added a goal for to the Riverhawks 17 total.

 

Despite a strong first half, and out-scoring Frederick 12-4, the Cougars found their rhythm midway through the second half.  AACC scored a few early on, but between fouls and Frederick's aggressive offensive drives, the Riverhawks had allowed the Cougars to score 8 unanswered points.

 

The Riverhawks still held off in the end and fought for a full 60 min; with Victoria Mattoon making 9 saves between the pipes and recording two groundballs outside the crease. AACC also won the ground-ball battle of the day, recording 24 to FCC's 12.

 

AACC will be hosting Erie Community College this Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Siegert Stadium. The NJCAA DI Region 3 Kats from Buffalo, NY will be opening their 2017 season with this road game against AACC.
