Game Notes

The Riverhawks fought a hard contest against the Cardinals of CCBC Catonsville at home Saturday, but ended up on the losing end of the 83-61 final.

Following a tough, strong win, with only five players, against Howard Community College last Thursday evening, the Riverhawks would battle another conference rival step-by-step in the first quarter. Hannah Lieb (Annapolis, MD) would score 12 of the Riverhawks points keeping the team alive with a 18-18 tie at the end of the first period.

The Cardinals tried to pick up the pace in the 2nd quarter and began rotating their only substitute in and out of the game more in order to apply fresh legs on the depleted Riverhawks roster following the injury to Karley Haensler (Glen Burnie, MD/Glen Burnie) two weeks ago. AACC was determined not to back down, keeping pace with CCBC and remaining close until the last minute of the 2nd period. Marcelaine Augustin (Upper Marlboro, MD/Riverdale Baptist) would sink 2 free throws at the 1:07 mark bringing the Riverhawks to within four, but a quick 2-points on the other end followed by a Riverhawk turnover and a 3-point shot by CCBC would see a five point swing in the Cardinals favor and the period would come to an end with the Riverhawks down by nine, 42-33.

The Riverhawks would find themselves still in the game throughout the third quarter, never allowing the Cardinals to get too far out front, managing to hold CCBC to just 18 points in the 3rd period while scoring 17 points. With a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Marcelaine Augustin (Upper Marlboro, MD/Riverdale Baptist) AACC would only be down by 10 at the end of the 3rd period (60-50). Turnovers and fatigue would begin to be unfortunate factors in the 4th period of the game however, as AACC would finish the game with 20 turnovers versus 13 by CCBC. Anne Arundel would end up being outscored 23-11 in the fourth period and Sarah Healy (Davidsonville,MD/South River) would foul out at the 2:46 mark, exiting the game with 6 points and 9 rebounds and leaving the Riverhawks to finish the game with four players. With Coach Lonnie Makell still calling plays, although down by double-digits at this point, the Riverhawks would display a never quit attitude and play tough until the final buzzer. Facing an opponent that averages 72 points per game with a 7-2 record on the road would prove too large a hill to climb.

Marcelaine Augustin (Upper Marlboro, MD/Riverdale Baptist) ended the afternoon with 14 points, shooting perfect from the foul line (4-4) and six assists.  Leading scorer Hannah Lieb (Annapolis, MD) finished with 25 points and 8 rebounds for the Riverhawks.
