The Riverhawk women's softball team swept the Pioneers of Butler County Community College with past Saturday (4/28), to claim the 2018 NJCAA DIII Region XX Championship title. Hosted at AACC, the Riverhawks put on a dominating display.

Game 1 Notes

The Riverhawks took little time to begin their commanding scoring production – scoring four runs off four hits in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. Scoring two more runs in the second and holding the Pioneers to zero – the Riverhawks were leading 6-0 heading into the bottom of the 3rd.

With momentum already in favor of the heavy bats of AACC, Riverhawk Katherine Rosati (Crofton, MD/Arundel) crushed a grand slam home run driving in four of the eight runs scored in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Holding the Pioneers to zero, the Riverhawks took game one of the double-elimination tournament in 5 innings (mercy rule) with the final score, 14-0.

Kaitlyn Nutwell (Deale, MD/Southern) would get the win for AACC, pitching 5 innings – allowing just one hit, zero runs while striking out five. Rosati finished 3-for-4 with her grand slam, two runs, and six RBI, Logan Endley-Abbott (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) finished 3-for-3 with two runs and 2 RBI, Hope Micallef (College Park, MD/Elizabeth Seton) went 3-for-4 with three runs, with rest of the Riverhawk roster contributing to the 18 hits for game one.

Game 2 Notes

The Riverhawks would kick-off game two with authority, utilizing great base running and taking full advantage of Pioneer errors – scoring three runs off two hits to take a 3-0 lead after the 1st. As both teams worked their defense in the field, the scoreboard would remain 3-0 (AACC) through the top of the 4th.

Once again, the Riverhawks delivered a crushing blow to the Pioneers as Nutwell stepped up to the plate and just as Rosati did in game one – cleared the fence for the second AACC grand slam of the day. Paired with Jenna Weinstein's (Odenton, MD/Arundel) RBI single to start the inning, the Riverhawks now led 8-0.

With championship ruling in effect – the Pioneers would have a full 7-inning game to attempt a comeback. Relentless in their play, Nutwell would once again clear the fence with Endley-Abbott on base for a two-run homer. To keep the Riverhawk fans going, Randall Graham (Bowie, MD/Bowie) would hit a home run of her own putting AACC on top by 11 before Butler would close out the inning.

Unable to score in the top of the 7th, the Riverhawks would earn the win 11-0. With double-elimination tournament format, the sweep over Butler County Community College would earn the Anne Arundel Community College Riverhawks the 2018 NJCAA DIII Region 20 Championship title.

For their tournament performaces, Kaitlyn Nutwell, Jenna Weinstein, Hope Micallef, Katherine Rosati (AACC), and Ashley Coon (BCCC) earned All-Tournament Team.
