Men's Basketball Drops Close Game to CACC

ARNOLD, MD – It was a close one for the Anne Arundel Community College men's basketball team Friday, but the Riverhawks couldn't close out against visiting Community College of Allegheny County, falling 89-87 to the Wild Cats.

Jamar Young led AACC with 21 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, while Davon Jones recorded 20 points, six defensive boards, and three blocks. Braeden Cavey also scored in double digits with 11 points to go with four rebounds, two steals, and a block.

The game stayed close throughout the first half, seeing the Wild Cats carry a 47-44 lead into the break. AACC stormed out of the break to take a six-point lead on a Keith Wyatt, Jr. layup two minutes into the half.

CCAC tied it up and took the lead on a three-point play at the 16:41 mark, after which Joseph Chase followed with his own three-point conversion for the Riverhawks to retake the lead, 58-56. AACC went ahead by five on a Matthew Kern three-pointer at the 13:40 mark, after which the Riverhawks didn't relinquish the lead through three ties.

The teams traded the lead back and forth three times before CACC took a brief lead which was wiped away by a Cavey three-pointer with 5:58 to go. Cavey followed with a jumper to put the Riverhawks ahead by four, 82-78.

The Wild Cats used their rebounding prowess to put in a second chance layup and a layup in transition to take an 85-84 lead with 2:15 left to play and extended the advantage to three on another inside basket before AACC's Jones sank a three-pointer to knot the game at 87-87 with 1:25 left to play.

A late Riverhawks turnover sent the ball down for CACC's Jalen Rogers, who hit a jumper to take an 89-87 lead. CACC was sent to the line for a pair of free throws, which were both missed.

Consecutive AACC timeouts after Jones secured the rebound set up the Riverhawks for a final shot, but the ball sailed wide.

CACC scored 66 of its points in the paint, and scored 25 second chance points. Overall the Wild Cats held a 57-44 rebounding advantage. AACC's bench put in 22 points on the night, and AACC scored 13 three-pointers (41.9%) in the game.

The Riverhawks host Harford CC Saturday at 3 pm.
