Riverhawks Top Chesapeake in Final Seconds

ARNOLD, MD – Anne Arundel Community College's men's basketball team defeated the Skipjacks of Chesapeake College, 91-90, Saturday afternoon in the Jenkins Gymnasium. The Riverhawks improved to 5-13 on the season, and 2-9 in the conference with Saturday's win.

For the better part of the first half, Chesapeake had led as AACC struggled to find their rhythm. As Larry Stevenson (Charleston, SC/Sigonella) and Anthony Frazier (Washington, DC/Arundel) began to get the Riverhawk offense going in the right direction, AACC were able to bounce back and find themselves with a 59-50 lead after the half. Stevenson headed to the locker room with 23 points, and Frazier with 18.

The second half had both teams out charging fast, which lead to several lead changes early on. As the minutes continued, the Riverhawks, seemingly plagued by turnovers, had let their lead slip away to Chesapeake, who began a small scoring rally.

After sending a Skipjack to the foul line, the Riverhawks now trailed 90-89 with just 13 seconds remaining. Stevenson brought the ball up the court to start the offensive drive and it was Marcus Dentley (Pasadena, MD/Northeast) who scored a short jumper in the paint to claim the lead 91-90.

With just 1.4 seconds the Skipjacks threw up a shot from way beyond half-court but it failed to find the net. With the miss in Chesapeake's final attempt, the Riverhawks secured the win, 91-90. Stevenson finished the game with 31 points, Frazier with 22, and Dentley with 14.

The Riverhawks will travel to Baltimore City County College on Wednesday February 1st to face the NJCAA DI Region 20 Panthers. Tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. following the women's game.
